I agree with fujimo. Glass would be wy too strong for the belly. Be sure you exercise that bow well to retrain it to bend and recver before you start shooting it.
Is the bow made of osage or lemonwood? Got any pics?

i'm pretty sure its osage. i will try to get some pics up later this evening.

would it have a better chance/ be more durable if i used hickory or boo to back it?

If the wood is osage then hickory or boo would work. Of the two I'd go with thin hickory.
Osage that old would be almost black. Lemonwood would be a dark golden color.

Lemonwood should be light yellow to a golden color. One noticable thing about lemonwood is its lack of growth rings. Being a tropical wood its growing season last all year. It has a smoother consistance as far as looks go too.

Old aged lemonwood looks dark olive-colored to me.

Back it with silk, then put a snake skin on top of the silk.

Some of those old bow did have paper backings. In the York catalog the selfbows were $7 and the ones with paper backings were $9.

That looks like lemonwood to me. Those backings were compressed paper I think.

Rawhide or hickory, rawhide would be the easiest.
