TN Classic 2014.....Help me & a buddy!
« on: November 11, 2013, 10:33:00 PM »
Myself & a really good friend of mine have a Canada bear hunt planned for June 2014.
We're both wanting to kill a bear as primitively as possible.
We have cane arrows, stone points & I'll be hunting in 17th Century clothing I made myself, but neither of us have self built, selfbows.
We'll both be at the Classic (me for my 5th consecutive year) & we are wondering what it actually takes to get involved in building our own, first bows.
We have neither staves nor experience, but are willing to work & pay for whatever it takes.

Rob, you can enter(for a fee) the selfbow challenge and receive a stave and have access to the bow building area, tools some of the best wood bow builders to help. Pappy generally has hickory but there might be other wood also. Contact Pappy for more details.
I'll be happy to help you with the build. I spend most of my time under the bow shed anyway. d;^)  Didn't you tiller one of David's boo/ipe blanks a few years ago?

Since your only a couple hours away I'd get a hold of Mark(Pappy),n schedule a weekend to come up during the off season...there will be room for you at the classic in the shop, but you'll have way more space and a more personal one on one during a normal weekend at twin oaks...but is always fun making bows at the classic too..if you do it at the classic I'd suggest being there by early Thur and no later...Thursday Friday n Saturday the shop is at its peak..and you'll want to give yourself a couple days to build a bow for your first time...I usually end up building several while I'm down there, and helping a lot of first timers, and novice builders without too many bows under there belt....man,that shop is a blast during the classic...and the fellowship between fellow bowyers is the main reason I go ... there will be plenty of guys there to help..although those helping can get swamped, hence why a normal weekend up there might be better for ya since your so close...and thanks for putting this thread up...now I'm jonsing for some classic fun

I hear ya on the classic fun.  I've never done the selfbow challenge but I did go through David Knight's BBI class a few years back and it was awesome.  The bow I made is still shooting today.  Taking that class is what started me down this slippery bow making slope.  Good luck on your hunt though Rob.  I might see ya at a Fartes shoot before but if not I look forward to seeing what you build at the Classic.
