Another lesson learned!
« on: December 19, 2013, 12:49:00 PM »
Today I felt energized when I arrived home at 8am from work. I deceided to head to the garage and get a new R/D glass bow all glued up before heading for bed.

Well all was going well… Dry run looked beautiful, motified my oven  a bit, and got everything ready. I spread glue on each layer and got to the newly shaped riser. Spread glue all over it and pressed it down into the washers. It is a snug fit and held everything down in the dry run. Went to grab the clamp to hold it in place while I glued up the back side of the bow. As soon as my hand came off the riser it sprang up like a jack in the box.

Here is the end result…

Well after a few choice words I looked at the damage. Overall I chipped off about 2-3 inches from each fade

After  cleaning up everything all I can do is take a few shots of moonshine and head to bed… I figured I end with a little personal message….

OH KENNY!!!! Hope you are able to buy something purdy for the wifey after you get done with my order!

Night all!!!

I know its a little late but you can regrind the fades and add a power lam to make up the 3 inches you lost.. I keep extra risers in my shop ready to glue up just in case..

Man that sucks.  Busting up the fades before it's all secured in the press has always been one of my fears.  Once I get the fades shaped, I handle that sucker like it's fine china.  Now you got me real scared.

I'm sure Kenny will offer his condolences, and then be more than happy to take your order

Justin, been there did that and it sucks. I was fortunate enough to have an extra riser ground and ready to go, all be it not on purpose. Be well assured it will happen again if your let your mind slip during glue up, especially if you build a lot of bows. At least next time you will be prepared with an extra riser ground out ready to go. It may not be the perfect wood match for the limbs but at least you'll have a bow and not fire wood that ya can't burn.

I'd say that bottle in the picture might have something to do with it!

I fit my riser to the form and never have a problem at glue-up. I don't even understand how that could even happen.

I think Roy was gonna demonstrate how to heat bend a bow into proper alignment. Or maybe he WAS making a giant boomerang...   :bigsmyl:
