"branding" lams under clear glass
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:53:00 AM »
a buddy of mine wants to come over and make use of my shop for a couple laminated bows for him and his dad. surprise for his dad. they own a cattle ranch and he wants to "brand" the lams with his familys brand before we glues it all together. how would we go about doing that? would burning it in with a small iron cause problems?

thanks ya'll in advance.

heading to garage to glue up my first hill style.

i don't think that would be a problem. Some of the early tomahawk bows had an arrow burned into the lam. Dale had an artist do it with a wood burner. Make sure you clean off any ash.

If it's where the lam runs up the riser, definitely no problem, if it's in the limb, you may want to fill it with ca glue depending on how deep you burn into the wood.  The only problem I could foresee is having it not completely fill with glue, but if it's super shallow, I doubt that will be an issue!

The only other thing would be crushing wood fibers when burning (depending on how big the stamp is) and making a shallow area in the lam.  Doubt that will be much of a problem either though haha

I've also been thinking of branding the limb on the riser section. Just haven't found/made a branding iron. Definitely like to see pics when you get one glued up! Good Luck
