Carbon or no carbon

Hi Bowyers!

I have another question, this time concerning carbon...

Ive read in a couple of other posts, that carbon layers can be a little difficult.. with over powering the other materials...

Im building a horn shaped bow and wanted to slip a sheet of carbon under the backing glass to bump up the arrow speed a little,

It is only ,0079" thick,
would this cause difficulties between the balance of tension and compression with just that one layer??

Also does carbon adhere to the normal epoxies??

The times I've messed with carbon I used it exactly like you want to, just under back glass and had no problems. I think and I could be wrong its when you start moving it toward the belly is when you run into by he overpowering and it will shear off other lams. The guys that use this stuff all the time have spent a lot of time on design to get the most performance out of it and I'll bet they broke a few limbs until they found their design.

If your carbon is sanded both side you will be good with smooth on epoxy. It will also increase your weight 2 to 2.5 times what a wood veneer of the same size would.

Thanks Cory! And how did the bow turn out? Of corse i want a faster arrow, I just like a real fast arrow!  :D   but im not sure if carbon will make that much difference or if i should bother with it at all. (it would be also under the wood veneer.

I have seen this Bear paw "speed tuff" stuff, any idea about it?

It would go under the belly and backing glass and veneer.

There's another forum that covers carbon extensively and would be very helpful.  They won't let us say the name, but the guys are a bunch of Pirates if that helps.

I can't post the link here but this is a speed test of a few limbs, glass/wood, carbon/wood, and carbon/foam by samick. The model names are redacted so I don't get in trouble here.

Samick makes lots of limbs so I'd imagine they know what they're doing, and I believe all these limbs have the same profile. Carbon vs glass doesn't seem to make a hell of alot of difference. I say Keep it simple ...
