Decoration under glass?
« on: January 26, 2014, 05:16:00 PM »
Hey everyone,

Ive been thinking about decoration for my bow, and was wondering if putting paper (coloured) soaked in epoxy under the clear glass would effect the glue line? It would just be a small section...

What do you think? would the paper be too thick?
cheers

Jacob

I`ve seen bows with that and I still wonder why it`s not more common to use cloth or paper printed; every design or exclusive wood can be reproduced cheap and easy!

I wouldn't want a bow lamination stuck to a piece of paper.

I don't have any solid evidence that it would be risky but to me is sounds like you would create a weak area in the limb.

I think Paul Shafer put camo cloth under glass(correct me if I'm wrong on that).

If the epoxy soaked clear thru the paper, I "think" it would be OK.

DISCLAIMER -- thinking is most always dangerous for me tho.  :D

Maybe I should remind you that a 0,6mm veneer of some woods/cuts is easier to tear apart than paper...
Swissbow did a nice recurve with cloth;

Easy to be soaked and when soaked like paper micarta... don`t know what could be wrong with!

A friend of mine uses shoot through camo netting with no problems. Looks cool too!

I have seen a few bows with cloth veneers. You need to be sure they are totally saturated with glue.

And don`t use those of fabric fibres that can`t be glued with epoxi...

I just got some of those faux copperhead skins from 3R, I may have to do a little a little R & D to see if they will work under glass.  They saturate with tb3 so maybe smooth on will work too.

I think the right "unique" pattern would be neet ..ocasionally but to use it to replace exotic woods wouldn't do it for me. Kind of like a diamond vs. a cubic zirconia only in this case you could tell that it wasn't real.
Not everybody is into the exotic thing, but I am and just revel in the magical wood created by the good lord for us to enjoy...heck, I don't even like to use stain.

I agree with Jim. I think you'd be fine, as long as the resin totally wet out the cloth or paper. But why replace a fine wood with something lesser. A bow lasts a long time and is probably worth a few extra bucks to get a really fine product.

Thanks everyone!

I also love beautiful exotic woods and i wouldn't like to cover the whole thing up! its more for this kind of thing, even though this particular one from saluki is with birchbark..

Actually i might just consider gluing birchbark on top of the glass!!!!?!
