What to replace my table with on grizzly edge sander?
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:53:00 PM »
So I have the grizzly edge sander with the wrap around table, and it is the most used tool in my shop, however, I have a serious issue with the table that was included with it.  It's warped and doesn't sit at 90 degrees to the platen.

I'm guessing that others that have this sander have also encountered this, so I was wondering what you guys replaced your table with and how it worked out for you.  Any other info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I have had the same sander for at least 10 years and my table has been fine. I really wouldn't like to replace it with something else because it works for me. Have you spoken to Grizzly about it? Maybe they would replace it with a new one or sell you a new table. I do live in a fairly dry climate so maybe that's why its stayed straight.  Bob

I would make a table out of a sheet of 3/4 inch birch plywood, it's a very strong, smooth, clean plywood! Cut it in half, then lay your old table on it , trace it out, and cut it out. Then I would seal it with a good varnish to keep moisture out of it. And if you want to get fancy, you could glue a piece of Formica on top because in time the varnish will wear off and expose the wood to moisture.

Most of California is try too.  Can you make your own table out of some decent plywood like baltic birch or something?  Growing up in a cabinet shop, our edge sanders never had the wrap around table from the factory, we would just make our own.

of course if it's new enough, Grizzly will generally replace it.  They've always been fairly decent to deal with.

I have the same sander, it's only 10 months old, but I was not crazy about the table. It's made out of particle board crap. But I have no problems with it thus far.

Thanks Roy, just got back from buying the piece of birch ply.  Would poly work as a finish?  Or too delicate? Don't have varnish on hand, could go grab some though.  Would kind of like to top it with something, couldn't find any formica though.  Might have to check out home depot.

Welcome Bro. Poly will work, all ya need is too seal it from the moisture that may be present. You could top it with some sort of counter top, etc material. Any chance you could peel off the top that's on the old table? Might need some work to get the glue and wood particles off it? But might be better going with a new piece also.

That birch is some nice plywood isn't it? That's what I made my, cough, choke, gag, glass bow forms out of when I lost my head a few years ago and wanted to make a glass bow. LOL  :)

Try a cabinet shop and look for a throw away counter top. That's what I did after my wrap around top ce apart

I think I should be able to find a topper at home depot, just have to get down there haha.  And yes, this birch ply is beautiful.  Will be coming back for more of it when I go to make a recurve form!  And I didn't know you tried glass Roy!  How'd it turn out?

I never finished it, wanted 45 and it came in at 35. Gave it away. Never tried another.
