Hey gang,

While waiting for some lams to come in for another try at a tilam, I glued together a riser piece from some stuff I had laying around.

Got a little carried away and didn't think about grain orientation...    :knothead:    

The fades are more or less flat grained osage.

The bow will be designed similar to Ben's riser shown below...

Yes it's safe. Frankly the grain orientation shouldn't matter much at all since your backing will run across the back of the riser.

I only worry about grain orientation in a riser if it's a takedown with no backing or glass across the back sire of the riser.

Other than that it's all just about what will look the best, whether you want edge grain or flat grain showing on the sides of the riser and in the grip area.

In this case, I'd probably just try and save a piece of flat grain osage for a riser overlay ... just for the look of it.

Good luck. BTW I have another one like this in the works but is taking a back seat to my swap bow for now. It will be hickory back walnut core and shedua belly with cocobolo riser.

I'm very curious how that shedua belly works out.
Looks interesting on paper..

The riser overlay idea is interesting...and very well might look better than what I have planned.

As this tri will be Hick,walnut,osage I'm thinking the riser lams will fit right in with the limb lams...or it might be ugly as sin...lol

I don't cut my riser out till I take the bow out of the clamps so I know where to cut it. Then I cut it to the arc of the bows riser section and glue it up. But you could be ok.

Don't panic, John. You will be fine, hopefully.   :)  Maybe.  :)  Maybe not.  :)

But unless you put a lot of deflex into your riser, I don't think it will fit well. And I would not put a lot of deflex into your riser because of the trouble you had with the last bow. So all you can do is glue up the bow and see how it matches up, you prolly will have to flatten out the arc is my guess. Or make another riser and save that one for another bow on down the road.

John here is how I fit the riser to the bow.

See how much arc is in the riser section of the bow after glue up? Every bow build will have a little bit different arc.

   

I lay the riser block on it's side, position the riser section of the bow centered on the riser block and trace it out, then cut it out, then use a sander or hand tools to get a good snug fit.


   

Here it is ready for glue up.

   

Will look like this when done.

Now I see you were/are sincerely trying to help. Thank you for that.

This next tri lam is going to be of a different design Roy.
It's going to be a forward handle with one part of the riser/powerlam sandwiched between the backing and the core.
The center of the bow will be flat.

Then after the initial glue up I'll glue on the belly side of the riser.

The piece I made above goes in like this...

Is that so when it blows, the front of the riser flies one way, the power lam flies another way, and the belly riser flies towards ya? LMAO  Sorry John, just had to..    :laughing:    :laughing:

Bocote is right up there as my fav.

Sure is pretty there Roy.
The couple pieces I've worked with over the years liked to check..sorta scared me off from putting in bows.

I know it's done all the time..I just need to learn more about wood and humidity/treatment to keep it from happening.

The 2 custom bows I've had made were bocote..love the looks of the stuff...
