I have even used a strip of wood.I used some wax on it so any leaked glue wouldnt stick to it.

i used a hickory backing strip on my form, glued down with contact- sealed with verathane and waxed with fiberglass mold release wax- works very well!!

Last year when I ordered a Formica strip Bingham's sent me clear Gordon glass.  So... that's what I put on the two forms I just made.

to be honest, i think metal, formica or glass would be the way better option, just that we live so far from civilization, and i was impatient to start building, i went with the wood- it has worked well, just took a little more effort to get it prepared. and would not be as durable as the above- but then it shouldnt get knocked about too much anyway.

As to the length question, suggest that it be 72".  Will match the glass and lams and will allow you to make longer bows in the future if you wish.
