Lam grinder idea
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:26:00 PM »
I am thinking of getting a wood lathe soon. I was looking at  some today and the thought of also using it to grind laminations on came to mind. Thinking if I put a drum sander on it I could make an adjustable table to clamp to the lathes ways. It would work kinda like some are doing with the belt sanders. If nothing else it helps me justify the lathe.

So you don't have to center your drum on a live center before every use , look into a rotating tail stock chuck for the tail stock and a simple drill chuck for the drive stock. This may allow you to build your drum on a 1/2" rod platform, how much experience you have on a lathe?

Not much experience with a wood lathe, plenty with a metal lathe. I have a 15 x 40 metal lathe and a milling machine. So making this work should not be a problem. I like the idea of the drill chuck to drive it.
Just thinking it may be better to use the mill to make a grinder
Just chuck the sAnding drum in the spindle and just move the table In for thickness. Clamp the grinding fixture in the vice.

I bought this for grinding lams
It does a very good job

I can make 4 tapers starting with 3/16"-1/4" thick and grind down to .080-.100 in no time.

Mark that is really nice. What kind of sand paper does it use,
Sleeves or roll? I had kinda the same thing in mind but  running the sanding drum on my lathe and the base would be clamped to the bed of the lathe.

You buy the full size sheets, you get 3 one way and 1 more the other way (Total 4 out of one sheet)

You can mount this on 3/4" plywood and store it anywhere.
If you have to push your lams by hand you need to push them left to right or vice versa. On a lathe it would be front to  back  (awkward).
you have to keep them moving.
