arrow footings- diamondwood or actionwood
« on: March 02, 2014, 08:04:00 PM »
my brother asked me if anyone made 4 point footed arrows using diamondwood or actionwood. did a search and found nothing. could it be done? or would there be problems? he's a target only shooter so he wants "purty" looking shootable arrows. what are your thoughts?

I think both are layered, like plywood?
I would want a hard wood footing.

It works. That is what used when I was first figuring out how to make them. I only used it on a couple though. Purple Heart, wenge and rosewood look better if you ask me.

Actionwood and Diamondwood are both ridiculously strong, and unless you're putting them on hickory shafts or something, they're probably way stronger than the shaft material.

It should work just fine with either.

Whether it looks nice is subjective.

Both are tough, but dymondwood is even more so. It is a lot more pricey though!

As mentioned, Whispering Wind Arrows uses Diamondwood.  I have used their footed shafts for years.  They are beautiful, and stronger than most natural woods.  Snag with Wilderness Arrows is in the process of finalizing his processes for making footed shafts and will be offering Diamondwood as an option.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

The benefits of Dymondwood is that it is consistent in mass weight and structurally stable. We will be offering both Dymondwood and some exotic hardwoods as footings.  Will be running some to setup the jigs and machinery in 2 weeks.

How well will the diamond wood work using a small hand plane compared to other regular grained wood?

I'll bet it looks really good.

I don't know Ron. We'll be using a table saw, rotor, commercial shaft sander, etc.

Would like to see some pictures of your set up.
I won't be trying anything like it but like footed arrows.

Not only do you get a stronger point end that resists breaking but the added FOC is a plus.
