Wood glue as a bow finish?
« on: May 03, 2014, 04:43:00 PM »
Anyone used Franklin II wood glue as a finish on self bows? I believe that's what Ed Scott told me he used on the Owls some time back and curious if anyone else has tried it.

I've heard of using smooth on, but not wood glue.  Would be worth it just to buy a can of minwax or spar varnish, home depot sells um in spray cans for cheap and it'd give what I'd imagine to be a much better finish.

I should start doing that. Have mixed paint in with fiberglass works great.  But as far as backing goes you can use any color fabric on a wood bow and just simply add some water based paint to the glue.

I have used wood glue mixed with ashes on a bow.
I would think a waterproof glue would work. Try it on scrap.

I've used a thinned solution of TBIII on bows and arrows, seemed to work okay.  Produces a somewhat flat finish.

I've used TBIII over sinew as a waterproof covering but added Tru-Oil over that. TBII will get sticky if it gets wet so I don't think it would be good as a finish. I saw a bow at the Classic this past weekend that Clint(Scrub-buster) used TBIII as a finish. It looked good with a nice dull finish but I'm not sure how durable it would be.
