Bamboo lam failure.
« on: May 24, 2014, 12:49:00 PM »
I'm working on a bamboo, cherry, bamboo tri lam that has developed a serious problem. The belly lams are scorched bamboo that has been thinned to about 1/8" tapering to 1/16". I also thinned them some to help them conform to the fades. I have never had a problem doing this before, but this time, one lam is beginning to hinge right at the tip of the fadeout. I noticed it when I strung the bow at about 4" of brace. It looks like a crease is forming in the bamboo, but the core and back look ok. I was careful not to pull it far and the tiller looks good at this point so I think it might be the belly lam only.
This bow is glued together with TBIII. Do you guys think I might be able to remove just the belly lam using a heat gun so I can glue on a new piece? Would it be an idea to heat the lam quickly using a torch so the heat doesn't have time to migrate through to the back lam?
I didn't take pictures because it's hard to see unless I really bend it, and I won't do that.
Any help will be appreciated.
Dave.

I don't think you'll be able to get it hot enough to get the TBIII to turn loose without burning the wood up. You may be able to cut it close with a band saw and take it back to the core with a belt sander. You would have to work very carefully and slowly going that route though.

You only have to get the glue to 150deg(F) for it to release. I have removed a few hickory backings with a heat gun and flat screwdriver. Start at the tip and heat the boo with a heat gun. When it gets hot force the screwdriver under the boo and work down the limb, heating as you go. Once you remove that boo mam just clean up the old glue and re-glue a new belly lam.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

Thanks guys. I'll be working on this later tonight, after I get some garden work done.
