Another finish question
« on: June 16, 2014, 04:37:00 PM »
I've been using wipe on poly with fair success for a while. But I have learned that it doesn't really cure on coco bolo unless you wait for 6 months.

I'm thinking of sealing with superglue on the coco, then finishing with spray lacquer. I had good success with this method on a glass bow I refinished.

Here is my question, has anyone sealed an entire wood bow with superglue, obviously very thin layer just for some moisture resistance. I'm concerned that if I only use lacquer on the limbs they won't be very water resistant. So that made me think maybe I just should seal the whole thing with superglue.

I guess I could try poly over superglue, but my understanding is that poly doesn't like to stick to anything.

Any thoughts?

When I have used cocobolo on my bows I have used a sanding sealer. Around three coats with light sanding in between. I then have used the wipe on poly with no problems.

You could try that I have had much success with that. I get a screaming headache using that much superglue.

You can use lacquer as your sealer. Generally the benefit of sanding sealer as a stand-alone product is it has a little better build up than your final finish in less coats for sanding. Can probably just use lacquer for something as small as a bow with something that dries as fast as lacquer. Once I've sprayed and sanded a couple of times to get things smooth, I move on to whatever finish I want and never have a problem on the coco.

I've also just used lacquer and applied multiple coats of wax over the top. Has held up well, but has not seen extended hunting in the rain yet.

I'm going to try Krystal on this swap bow. We'll see how that works on cocobola. I still sealed it with lacquer during the shooting and adjustment phase.

It's been my experience that poly will stick to super glue as well as de-waxed shellac. I always sand between coats.
