Question on making spliced veneers...
« on: June 19, 2014, 04:01:00 PM »
How do you guys clamp the pieces together? Specifically, how do you get the lateral pressure from the ends to push the pieces together?  Some kind of really long clamp?

Have any of you had the splice come apart when you cut and grind the veneer?

I make a fence on a straight board as a table , clamp one down next to the fence(plastic wrap under it) , clamp the other end of the 2nd one down to table board with the joint slightly proud, then clamp to the fence to tighten up.

Only made a few sets of 45* joints so there is prob a better way!  S- shaped joints are easier!  :D

For me I find the 45* joint to be easier than the "S" joint. Straight lines are easy to match and clamp up.

I do mine exactly as kenny.I make them up as thick boards. Then saw off as many as I want with the table saw and then run through the sander to desired thickness. So far I guess I am lucky as none have come apart.

Sounds like you aren't clamping or pushing from the ends then.

No, but basically the same thing by clamping down and pushing joint in tight...

BTW , I have never had one come loose either, even sawing to .065 to grind .025 s...

Make sure all is square and all( you already knew that tho)   :D
Stay sharp, Kenny.
