Heavy limbs, What wood for riser?
« on: July 21, 2014, 09:08:00 AM »
Hello,
A buddy of mine gave me a set of recurve td limbs that I need to make a riser for. The limbs are 64#@24 and are birdseye maple with walnut tapers. my draw is 31 1/2 so I will need a strong wood to hold up to the weight. what are the strongest woods that I should be looking at? Does anyone have a td of this weight?

I built a TD longbow that was #87@30". I used diamondwood for the riser. I made sure I didn't go too narrow with the grip and I kept the shelf 1/8" shy of center.  I ended up reducing the weight on that one, but the riser was still ok after about 1000 or so shots at that weight.

Most risers seem to fail from the corner of shelf/site window down towards your thumb's place on riser.

Be sure to make a good radius at the corner, this seems to help.

Dymondwood would be good, or a bunch of different pcs lammed together by yourself. But a single pc of wood for riser would be scary for me.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Look up Rutland plywood products for pics but buy from somebody that you don't have to buy 4 big panels to get it.

Unless of course ya wanna build a LOT of bows!  :D

Consider using an I beam in your riser if you need strength.
