Staining an Actionwood riser-- gel stain?

I've got an Actionwood ILF riser that's blonde maple colored.  I'm going to refinish it, and would like to stain it a darker color-- maybe a dark gray or ebony color.  I assume that regular oil-based stain wouldn't work due to the A-wood being impregnated with resin.  Would Minwax Gel Stain work?  I think it can be used to stain fiberglass, so I thought it might work OK on A-wood.

If not a good idea, any other stuff that would work?

Actionwood is not impregnated with resin.  that would be dymondwood.

Film dip might be a good choice. Myself I would not use a oil based stain/dye. Maybe an alcohol based dye would be a good choice? You would have to sand riser down pretty good to get to the wood. Then you still might have a splotchy looking riser.. Then your back to film dipping or painting.

actionwood does stain with alcohol based stains.

Not sure about oil based...haven't tried it.
