Excited!!! New to me bandsaw
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:45:00 PM »
Hi everyone, don't post much here, actually haven't been posting much at all lately, but got a new bandsaw today and i'm excited, lol. It is a JET JBS-14MW metal and wood 14" bansaw. The best part is it was free!!!! Not sure how old it is, manual says copyright 1983, but i know for a fact that it wasn't used hardly at all. It has been living in the basement of a house in new jersey that is owned by my grandmother. Anyway, just wanted to share the news and maybe get some opinions on a good blade for it, i won't get to use it for a while because i am currently attempting to pass my senior year at penn state but i have some wood at the ready and hope to start building ILF risers ASAP!!!   :)

Sounds like a great saw.  I have had good luck with Olson blades on my 14" saw.

I have a Delta X, and I'm sorry that I didn't get a Jet.  Band saws have a number of adjustments to achieve peak performance.  Do a google search and be sure to follow all of the safety rules.  For fine cuts use a blade that has more teeth per inch.  Thicker wood use fewer teeth with a more aggressive set.  I've always been comfortable with a blade that is 3/8" wide.  It would be wise to buy more than one blade.

If you're planning to build bows, I would suggest a 1/2" 4 tooth Timberwolf blade.  Timberwolf makes one of the best blades on the market right now.  They hold their sharpness very well.
Read your manual and learn how to set up your saw and tension the blade properly.  You will enjoy having a good band saw.

I use "Diamond saw works" "Sterling" band saw blades. Bandsawblades.com is less than 6 miles from my house..they only sell sterling blades. I stopped by there today and he made me two 113" blades in about 5 or 6 minutes. Before buying my first Sterling Diamond blade 5 years ago I researched them on several wood workers forums, they have a really good reputation.
