glue for bow form
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:57:00 PM »
for the two forms that i have built so far- i have just used cheap carpenters glue- as i have a few gallons of it- and screwed the three pieces of 1/2" ply together thoroughly.
would another glue hold up better in the hotbox- contact glue etc??
will be getting some lvl at some point when i get off island again- but in the mean time its laminated ply!

That's all I've ever used and never had a problem with the glue. The screws are holding everything together anyway.

I glued some parts and shims in a form with the urethane gorilla glue--and it has not moved or changed in any way

I have only used tite bond 2 Wood glue and about 100 1 1/4" drywall screws. I always thought the screws were doing most of the work since tite bond glue is said to "Soften" at 150 degrees.

thats exactly what i do Rob, and all is good thus far- but my concerns were the glue softening too-
but i will continue to do so- starting my static recurve form tomorrow!

In a job at an aircraft cabinetry company, we used 3M contact glue for all laminating of veneers and Formica. Veneers were then finished and the finish was baked on. Not sure of the temp.

The laminate was pressed at a very high pressure before any finishing process began.

I use 3M "High Strength 90" "high heat" spray on contact glue for gluing down the fiberglass strip and reverse taper onto my forms. Its said to be better than 3M 77. it has worked fine so far. I assume the 90 would work  on the plywood laminations too, I would still use at least 100 screws with it. I built 4 blank forms in 2009, I had a gallon of tite bond 2 glue and used it on the plywood along with drywall screw's. If I need another form I will try to find LVL to use.
