turkey/deer/hog arrow?!
« on: March 03, 2008, 11:50:00 PM »
i recently got a southern draw longbow ,43# at my draw ,from the man himself"jeff carter". he lives about 2 miles from me  :) ..anyways he said i could shoot whatever arrow i wanted out of the bow. he gave me a couple pse carbon force 100's w 125gr. heads. they shoot good, maybe a tad stiff for my draw and from not being full length. they only weigh around 345-350grs. i believe...this just seems to light...so my question is what would be a good overrall arrow weight for turkey/ southern deer/and the occassional feral hog(under 75lbs)?? i am thinking of trying some full length 1816 or 1916's...don't know alot about carbon though?

Brandon,

My Fiancee' is shooting a longbow about your weight, she is an accomplished bowhunter, and hog killer.

We have opted for the Sitka Grizzly Stik for her arrow, but whatever arrow you shoot, we think that 400 - 430 grains will allow you to take all of the game you mentioned, even hog larger than you listed.

I shoot both aluminum and carbon, I still believe that carbon gives lighter draw weight bows a little better edge in penetration due to the stacked kenitic inertia characteristics of carbon.

2016's should work fine with a 160 - 200 gr BH. You might look at CX 90...might even get a CX 150 to work, but would have to be long with lots of weight up front.

Hey all,

I also have a Southern Draw 64inches 43#@28 inches.  I love this bow.  It really does spit out any arrow I have shot from it.  With that in mind I havent found THE arrow to settle in on.  I have strongly considered the Grizzly Sitkas.  Unfortunatly I dont know the first thing about tuning in a carbon.
Do I simply Pick a broadhead/Fieldpoint weight and then start carving on the length of the shaft till it bareshafts nicely for me?  Pretty pricey shaft to burn through a half dozen or so to decide the right configuration.  Does anyone have a arrow tunning method that works for everyone?

Thanks,

Brian Gillispie

thanks guys for all the input....my only thing is i was figuring on a 400-450gr arrow(as you stated, scott)the only thing i guess i should've added is that i would like to accomplish all this with a BH no bigger than 125grs....i say this b/c around were i live its hard to find any point above 125grs....found one local shop that has 150grainers....more or less its about have the selected weight available without having to call 3rivers, just to order field points or BHs
