Finally a bow for me! Finished pics added!
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:07:00 PM »
So after a year of making bows for friends and family, I decided to build one for the upcoming season. Length wise I havent decided (60 to 64) Hill Style... but the stack is as follows:

.040 clear glass
.030 mango lams from IdahoCurt
.01 Osage parallel
.01 red elm taper @ .002"
.01 osage prallel
.05 glass

Bocote and white penolic laminated 14" riser.

So far about 5hrs work into it thanks to my new Grizzly oscillating sander. It used to take forever to get riser fades tapered perfectly. What a time saver! (Ill add pics once out of oven)

So after about 7 hours in the oven @ 165 I turned off the oven and let it sit in the form to cool overnight. This morning before church I cleaned off the boogers. Once I returned I did a bit more work with my new oscillating sander...and here is the riser and limb unveiled. Contrast looks pretty sweet!

Before my son's football game I found the center line (string method), layed out profile, cut out with bandsaw. I chopped the bow down to 64" but think I will have to pike down to 60". I put a long string on (after cleaning up edges and etc) and the weight is about 52lbs @ 28". I really want to be close to 60lbs @ 28" upon finish...I have yet to miss weight on a bow, not sure what I did here but there is a first time for everything!

You think it would stack if piked down to 60" to hit my 60lbs mark? (w/ 28" draw)

Looks good.  I would not cut it down anymore...finish it at this length and see what poundage you get.

Shouldn't stack eh? Thats good to hear, thanks Kelly. Brad why do you propose to finish as is? Is the long string not giving an accurate weight? As is it is now the bow will probably finish around 48 @ 28" which is a bit too light for me. I typically shoot around 65lbs and really enjoy the cast at that weight. Additionally, for a bow in a treestand piking to 60" would be more maneuverable...your thoughts?

What was the total stack you used for this build?

Looks good (althoug I prefere .004/.006 total taper on 16"risers on those Hills- so I don`t know if it makes 30" draw with 60" length)

Total stack is listed above - .420 with 14" riser and one .002 taper....I went ahead and piked to 60" and reformed limbs to new length. Which was essentially laying out to 1/2" tips and trapping slightly for a long string check. She now sits right where I wanted: 64lbs@28" should finish at or just under 60lbs  :)

Finally complete! I havent decided on putting skin on the handle or not? What do you think - black leather? I really like the way she turned out. Beautiful grained mango! Shoots really well for a short 60" tpt bow. Final weight was 63lbs @ 28". Fired my 29" 5335's at a consistent 175-180fps. I wish it would have turned out a bit longer, but Ill correct that on the next bow. Not sure why but my stack was off.... so I had to shorten to 60" to get the lb range I wanted. Cut to center and a fast flight string has her zipping! Note: 1st pic is before finish applied.

Wow, that mango is really beautiful, beautiful work! Really like the woods.  Personally, I'd say those woods are too beautiful to cover up! Not that it wouldn't look great with a wrap as well.

Looks Great.  Did you do a straight taper from fades to the tips?  Also, what's your width at the fades?
Nice Bow

Michels,
Yes straight taper from fades to tips. 1 1/4" at fades to 1/2" tips. My handle is a bit thicker, I like a really full grip so my handle is 1 3/8".
