Yet another BW spine ??
« on: March 04, 2008, 10:17:00 AM »
Ok some of you know that I just bought a Widow SA II 53#@28 my draw, it should be here the end of the week. Anyways I need a starting point for arrows both wood and carbons. Point weights will be 125gr 150gr and 200gr for both and up to 300gr on the carbons but 200gr would be the norm for both, would like arrows around 28 1/2" to 29" I'm guessing 70-75 or 75-80 for the woods and .400 spine for the carbons maybe .340 if left full length but don't want to do that.

I'm wanting a few diffrent setups the 125gr tip with a lighter arrow for turkey or should I keep it the way I will have it setup up for deer hunting next fall so I get used to the way that setup shoots? The reason for the lighter turkey setup is to help trajectory and so the arrow dosn't blow all the way through the turkey.

no one has responded so I will try, I have zero experience with carbon, so I am no help there, I would think you might be a little heavy on the wood spine, maybe 70lb or so, (I shoot 28 inch 80-85 out of my 60@27 PSAII) why go light on the turkey arrows? I would build a set you will use for deer and stick with it... its ok to shoot through the turkey..

Bud,
I sent you a PM... Did some stuff w/ testing Griz and other spines on several bows..

BW's, like Morrison, seem to be cut pretty far past center and that requires a heavier spine than the bow draw weight would suggest... like Dave said above... most I've seen in the 50# draw (BW's now) took at least 70# and some closer to 80# spine.

Good thing with stiff carbons is that you can front load em, go Extreme FOC, get the total weight up and still have a stiff enough arrow to use up that "cut past center" shelf on BW's.  :)
The words "Child" and "terminal illness" should never share the same sentence! Those who care-do, others question!

I shot my BW 53#@27 with 80-85 spine woodies and 340 Easton Axis. Cut to 28". The Axis arrows had 100 gr. brass inserts and 125gr. tips. Both flew perfect. Jim

I used Kelly's spine chart and it says 81# spine is what I need. Whith woodies I will be shooting 150gr-200gr heads and with carbons total tip weight with insert and head will be 200gr-300gr I'm hopeing .400 spine carbons are stiff enough or should I jump to .340 like Jim is doing? Like to keep total arrow weight around 580gr-640gr thats 11-12gpp

Might try some 2117 I have lying around to see how they work, but I'm not a big fan of aluminums any more.

I'll offer what I can.

My BW PSA's, SA's and MA's (5 in all) are all 50#'s @ 29 inches.  I pull an honest 29 so take that into consideration.

I ended up shooting 5575 Gold Tips cut to 30 inches with a 125 grain point.  No heavy insert up front, just the std GT aluminum insert.  That arrow bareshafts dead nuts to point of aim all the way out to 30 yds.  To add weight I stuffed a 5 GPI weight tube into them and the final arrow weight is 540 grains.

If you're pulling 28" but with a heavier point weight, the 5575 GT's would likely work for you.

GT's are the only carbons I've ever used so I can't offer anything on other brands.

Hope this helps.

I shoot a PTFV that is 43@28". I draw 30" so at this length I am shooting 49-50lbs. I shoot tapered cedar arrows that are 30-1/2" to back of field point. They are 85-89 pound spine, and weigh 610 gr. with 125 gr. field point installed. They fly great and pack a good wallop on impact.

I shoot Carbon Express Heritage 250 shafts out of my 60# Widow SAG. I use about 195 grains up front. That shaft flies stiff, however out of my 50# Widow PLGA. Heritage 150s would probably be about right for your setup. I Have a MAIII that likes stiff arrows. It may be cut a little closer to center than my other two.
