My homemeade drum sander.
« on: December 29, 2014, 06:27:00 PM »
I have been buying tools when affordable for a while and decided to build this one my self. I got the idea from a youtube video. Its a three inch drum with a 1/4 h.p. motor. Made the frame with azec and m.d.f. . Decided to get two tools out of it so lift the cube off its base, rotate, put back down on lineup pins, put table in place and its a spindle sander. MY next step is to grind some wood and see if it needs any adjustment. I have been wanting to build my own bows for a long time "procrastinator", now string material and some knowledge and its off to the archery range. I have some hickory and cherry and I am undecided of a third wood to use for a tri lam but I will figure it out. Unlike figuring out how to post photos on this site, I can't figure it out.https://www.dropbox.com/s/11fw78i0dg104iy/SAM_3813.JPG?dl=0https://www.dropbox.com/s/bz6x0k99sbs427d/SAM_3811.JPG?dl=0

I made a little drum sander like that and they work surprisingly well, my only regret is not going for 1/2hp.

Thomas S.  Good for you and yes pictures are worth a thousand words.

By the way, my favorite wood combination for all-wood tri-lams is by using hickory, black cherry and black walnut.  It's a great combination and the contrasting colors are really nice too.

I was able to get the first picture posted for you.  I couldn't get the second one.  The sander looks great.

Thanks, not sure why I was unable to post pics. I have some free time so I will be giving the sander a little test.

Nice sander!

I also like the handplane in the background. I use one more and more these days. I'm going to have to try in on bamboo as someone suggested in a different thread.

Try it again. Today I fine tuned it, made a couple modifications and grinded a nice flat, true 3/16" piece of hickory.Built the bench last week. It has retractable castors so I can move it around.                                                                                                    https://www.dropbox.com/s/6zfz0p86zqqtz2k/SAM_3820.JPG?dl=0

Cool design
