Glueing Glass
« on: February 11, 2015, 12:34:00 AM »
Has anyone tried gluing woven glass with TB3 before or is epoxy the only way to go.  And has anyone used G2 epoxy..?  Apparently is works well without the need for a heat.box.

If you want definate 100% confirmed information about a glue just send the manufacturer an email asking for the data sheet.

Good point, I'll use epoxy.

I have used g2 epoxy... I like it, mainly because it's easily available in Canada, lee valley sells it. I have used it with and without heat. And both have made excellent bows.

NO Epoxy requires added heat.  It cures just fine in 24 hours as long as the ambient temperature is above 70F.  Bowyers with ADHD, and other speed demons use hotboxes.  The rest of us relax and enjoy a bit of anticipation...

What are you using the woven glass for? I would thing unidirectional glass would be a better choice but I would not use either on a wood bow.

Woven glass..I would think that smooth on would be to "thick" to soak into it. If using  fiberglass strips like UL or ULS bo-tuff then yes "smooth on" is the industry standard..I only build fiberglass backed bows and I use both ULS and UL.  I do remember seeing someone on youtube using woven fiberglass as a bow backing on a board bow. I have only built 4 self bows and used deer rawhide as a backing over Mulberry or red oak myself, It was back in 1994 and we used titebond wood glue. I'm with Pat on not using glass on a self bow, The glass can over power the wood.. maybe linen or super thin raw hide would be better

laminating resins have  different viscosities and properties to bonding resins- talk to the supplier- they should have some good info- when building  wooden boats - a "west systems" epoxy will adhere to the wood and wet out the glass
cheers
