Osage selfbow
« on: March 24, 2015, 03:16:00 AM »
A really good guy named Danny over on the PA forum gave away about 40 osage staves awhile back (!)  He said that they all had their own particular challenges, knots and twist, etc., but if you wanted one you just had to pay the shipping cost.  Man, they went fast.  Osage poor wretch that I am, I was really happy to get one.   :)

It had some twist and was kinda crooked (not complaining), but only one knot hump and about an inch of reflex (definitely not complaining).

I think I learned a little more about making heat corrections from this stave.  Almost all of the twist is gone and it's as straight as it's going to be.  I put a little cherry bark on it just because I really like that stuff.    62" long and around 45#.  I've shot 130 arrows thru it and like the way it shoots.  Pictures make it look lighter in color than it really is.  Thanks for looking.

Nice work. Lots of nice bows came from all those staves.

Thanks Roy and Pat.  I'm following the thread on PA about the bows being made from Danny's staves and it's neat to watch the progress.  Very generous offer on his part.
