BBH suggestions
« on: April 18, 2015, 08:37:00 AM »
I am starting a bamboo backed hickory and am looking for suggestions. The hickory is 2" wide as is the bamboo. I'm looking to get 65# @ 28", though my friend only draws 26" on a good day.
I was thinking 62", 1 3/4" out about 15" and then tapering to 1/2" tips. I will glue in some reflex and maybe flip the tips a little. What thickness  of hickory should I go with for this weight. Any other suggestions or does this sound like it will work.
I was considering a mild R&D

First I would design it for the actual draw.  No sense leaving performance on the bench.

That said, I like your length.  1-3/4" is a little wide for my tastes.  I would go with 1-1/2" if you have good hickory.  I'd go with 1/2" thick since you aren't getting crazy with the R/D.  That will give you some margin of error.

Thanks guys, going to start putting it together this afternoon. Wood has good grain and clean. Will thin bamboo to lifelike edge. Should I cut it to profile before thinking or thin it and cut to profile, which would leave the edges of the ends thicker than the main part of the limb. Will check out some of your builds Roy to steal some ideas.

Yes, cut bamboo to profile and thin it to something less than a uniform 1/16" edge.
