Best lam grinder/belt sander for under $1500?
« on: June 05, 2015, 01:04:00 PM »
I am selling a few guns I no longer use and will have about $1500 to spend. I already have a decent table and band saw.

I would like to make my own laminations so I'm looking for a machine that will do that, be precise of course and long lasting.

Thanks for you help!

you send me the 15 hundy, and i will send you mu ol' delta sander- shes a beaut!!
seriously a lot of money for a drum sander to grind lams- you can get a really big drum sander for door panels etc for more money- but the guys on here mostly use the grizzly tools- and all seem to like them
guyts seem to like these:  https://www.grizzly.com/products/12-Baby-Drum-Sander/G0459
but i am sure there will be more responses- this is the grizzly fan club here!!

for 1500 you could get this baby too- then you would really be set up for some glass bow building, and have change!

I have both of those
I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means

I think I would buy the grizzly 10" drum sander G0716 and the grizzly edge sander G0512. Use the remainder for a shop air cleaner, random orbit sander (if you don't have one) and a good dust mask.

I have a jet 10-20 and have found it to be perfect for lams and bow making, but can't justify the price over the grizzly 10". I have also used a bigger drum sander once (G1079) but I really preferred the little 10-20.

I have the Jet 10 20 and really like it except it needs an outside bar of some sort to keep it from flexing when you grind really hard wood.

I also have the wrap around Grizzly edge sander and it has a small profile roller on one end which I use instead of an oscilating sander; It is the most used machine in my bow shop and I love it for profiling limbs. Highly recommend it.

One thing about the drum sanders, Make sure that the changing of the sandpaper is simple and easy to do. With the Jet I can change out paper in about 15 seconds. I have heard that the Grizzly is a great sander but hard to change the paper out but have not had personal experience with that. Maybe some of the guys can comment one way or another on that.

God bless, Steve

The baby drums use hook and loop. Just re wrap and two rounds of strap tape on both ends.
Roy this is my second one. Now I have two grits ready.
