Board Bow String Length Help
« on: December 24, 2015, 10:00:00 AM »
I just finished my first ever bow build. I built the 'so you wanna build a bow' Red Oak board bow build along on this forum.
I'm pretty pleased for a first attempt, but the only thing I'm not to sure about is the finished bow sting length and brace height.
The bow has the recurved tips and measures 66.5 inches noc to noc. So far my tiller is around 46 @ 27" which is exactly what I was looking for.
Eventually I'll start making my own strings , but for now I plan on ordering one.
Is the string length needed 66.5 (-) 3 inches? Or what would be the reccomended string length to order?
Sorry if I haven't provided enough details, I'm kinda new to bow building.
Thanks
DD

If your not familiar with that build along, it's a paramid long bow, but with recurved tips.

Next time I get up, I'll measure the string length on a bow.
I tie my own Flemish and they are usually 3 inches shorter for selfbows.

You should be able to measure nock to nock on the back of the bow and order your string with that number as AMO string length. My string jig is set up to make the proper string length at this length. I set it up for a 58" bow and it makes a slightly shorter string.

Never mind what I said 60x says do it another way.

The best made plan won't get it made the way you planned.

My most recent bow has about 1/2 inch of follow. The string is 4 inches shorter than the ntn distance of the bow.

There's plenty of you tube videos. Buy 2 spools of string of different colors and tie away. I like B 50.
