2016 Bow Building resolution
« on: January 01, 2016, 11:25:00 AM »
I would love to here if you all have any new goals in bow building for 2016.

I have one - I am going to purpose to build a sinew backed osage bow following Mike Yancy from Pine Hollow longbows instruction. I purchased his dvd and have watched it multiple times. it would be even more exciting if I could go out for one of his classes.

Do you have any new goals for this new year?

I don't make resolutions, but this year I plan to get off my backside and get to work on my black palm stave and my yew stave.

1.  Build a lam grinder.

2.  Build a first recurve.

3.  Build a TD possibly an ILF.

4.  All of my glass bows to this point have been ASLs and many who have seen them referred to them as "Hill style", but, they are not true Hill style bows.  So, this year I will build a true Hill style.  Or at least as close as I can get.  Maybe I'll foist it off on somebody in the bow swap.   :biglaugh:

My list of bowmaking goals this year is long. But most importantly...

To make a 70+lb yew ELB to hunt with.

To get caught up on the bow's I have promised and/or started.

To do a tillering/limb timing tutorial.

To make bows better than I've made to date.

To take better care of my tools.

And just generally kick some a$$ in my shop  :)

I ain't waitin around. I started early this morning.

I'm going to make a Bingham's hybrid for my daughter this winter.  Haven't decided on the lams and riser woods yet.  I've been looking at the beauties posted on here for some inspiration.
Honestly, for me, I don't need any more bows (I think I told myself that 10 bows ago), but I'm sure I'll make a couple more anyway.   :)
I want to get into shooting more.  I'm going to check out an archery shop in my area that has shooting lanes.  It's been in business for a long time and I hear that the owner is an old timer.  Hoping that I don't get too much sand kicked in my face by the wheelie guys.
Who knows; maybe I'll even make it to a Wisconsin Trad Archers shoot this summer.
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

Gonna make me a hickory self-bow this year for my hunting gear. I'm gonna try primitive this year for a change, I killed me a young doe earlier in the season with my laminated Red Stag, so for my next challenge I really want to get the job done with a bow I make.

Gonna shoot for about a 64" long bow, 55-60# at my 27" draw length, going to add some antler overlays to it, heat treat it and make a D-97 (I usually use B-50) string for it.

Going to make my first FG recurve.  Started working on the form already hoping for first glue up sometime in Jan.

After that...who knows.
Enjoy the hunt!  - Mitch

I'm gonna build a BBO just like Ro... NAH    :D

I think I'll go with a glass powered short forward handle long(short)bow in all gray dyed curly maple for turkey season.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I plan to build myself a new bow this year. Probably off of my Kenny M. form. Been considering making another 'flame bow' but who knows? I have a bow promised for a raffle also.

I'm aiming to make myself a few more Turkish hornbows. One heavy one....aiming for 130# and i'll be decorating it properly like the old bows.
I've also got a trip to Denver/Yellowstone/Washington/B.C. coming up this summer and I have to make a proper hunting set up for that. Going to be hunting in Colorado  :)  And cannot wait!

I'm thinking trilam for the grandsons  (2).  Had the TD in mind for them but maybe the trilam would be a better.  A better trad side anchor.  Am also thinking to get them more directly involved.  A trilam build would be more instructive for them and me too.

Since my brewing addiction I haven't done much with bowmaking. This year's plan is to rebuild the workbench and bow oven. After that I'm gonna make wood arrows, finish 2 bows, and start a few more by years end.

Mentor another 3 or 4 local college students through their first selfbow.  Didn't host a bow night last year, and kinda missed sharing the journey.  I did help several one on one to individually build a selfbow, but time is more efficient, goes faster, and more fun in a group setting.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

1. i will build a circular saw
2. i will make my own lams with it (formerly i was going to carpenter and they were not doing this properly and leave me lots of dirty work)
3. i will build glass long bow with those lams
4. i will build glass short recurve with those lams
5. i will make more arrows from bamboo (using garden stalk as a bamboo which is the best source for turkey conditions)
6. i will do all those if i can find a time from coding  :D

promise to myself  :D
these are not the droids you are looking for.
