question on backing
« on: January 07, 2016, 05:11:00 PM »
Hi guys I have some Ipe and would like to make a kids bow, maybe 54-58 inch, around 20-25# at 18-20 inch draw, what would you use for backing, would bamboo be to stiff and over powering for that?now that I,m typing this, I have lots of questions.how wide at the fades? any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank-you Burt

Using ipe for a bow that small and light, I'd suggest no wider than 5/8", no matter what you back it with. You will be left with a sliver of ipe when you hit your draw weight number.

I'd rip your stock right down to a 7/16 thick x 5/8 wide x 56-58 long. Just narrow the last 10" of each limb, keep it simple.

I make a lot of BBI kids bows.
I still make them about 1 1/4 inch wide at the fades.
Reccomend closer to 62 inch length.
I rip my Ipe to no more than 1/4" for that size range.
