Curly maple under glass?
« on: January 27, 2016, 05:44:00 PM »
I'm thinking about curly maple under clear glass for the back lam on my next Bingham hybrid.  I've heard that it should be avoided on an all wood lam bow, because it's weaker than your regular hard maple.   Anybody know if it poses a problem under glass?

Entombed in glass? None whatsoever. Build it with confidence.

In all wooden bows, I avoid it like the plague.

I have experience both ways. Some good. Some bad. Guess which is which

You simply can't beat nicely figured curly maple!!

And if you want to really make the figure pop under clear glass, you can use an alcohol based dye on the lambs. (Don't use an oil based stain or your glue won't hold)

That sure is pretty, bamboo.  Thanks for the tips, guys.
I love the way aniline dye looks on curly maple, John.  Yep, that's going to be the plan.

Curly anything looks good under glass.
I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means
