Crack in knot
« on: April 08, 2016, 08:11:00 AM »
Tillered my first bendy handle Osage yesterday on a stave that was saved from the burn pile. It's 62" ntn, 1" wide and has a small knot 3" from the center,,,it's dimpled on the bellyside, pimples on the back. After sanding back and belly with 220 grit, I strung it to watch the limbs during the draw and heard a tink. The knot popped a Crack that is horizontal. I could watch it open a little when flexed so I shot some super glue into it and unstrung it. What next??? I want to sinew repair the area then wrap with thread. Broke my heart hearing the crack  :(    I was able to get 51lbs@27" with little to no set using Eric Krewson's goof proof floor tiller method starting at 5/8" center tapering to 1/4" tips...what to do????

I would have used super glue too.

I have to say that I almost always tiller knots to not bend as much as the rest of the limb. I like them to appear stiffer.

When I have not done that I've had problems.

Do you think I should sinew around the knot then wrap with thread and soaked down with super glue? This bow was made from a sliver of a real stave. Questioned myself many times about wasting time on it. I did and this bow + a Douglas fir shaft=smile like a little kid,,,,,scrunch face and all  :)

I've got pics back, belly, and un-strung profile, but cannot post them.

Many times a knot will check or crack. Generally super glue will fix it.

It will probably be ok with just the super glue unless the crack extends beyond the knot. Jawge
