Rookie Self Bow
« on: July 07, 2016, 03:55:00 PM »
Just completed except for recording bow info, naming, wrapping handle with leather and clear coating.  I'm waiting for clear coat until it can dry it some more in car.  Rawhide backed, but I think stained too soon?  Hoping some moisture will escape, even though stain and rawhide...not sure if it will much.
The bow is 60 NTN and probably 47-50#@ 47", In that range, judging from comparison of my laminated bows .  The bow is a bit short, but had to whack some off the end do to a bad spot...stacks a bit at end of draw but not terrible. Shot 50 times or so and really liked it out to 15-18 yds. Super quiet and no hand shock. 55-60 spine with 160's, cut 28.25" . Cast probably not so good 2-3 inches of set.
Hickory sapling from my yard.  I'm super happy with it for a first self bow.
Must be hooked as I've got 3 Hickory staves drying and 4 Maple.  Took bark off Hickory, but not sure what to do about Maple...not even sure what kind of Maple.  Any help on that would be greatly appreciated. Cut both in Southern North Carolina above Blue Ridge, GA.
I'm super frustrated with posting pics and figuring pixels out...somehow managed this one.  This is my first post so if anyone can lead me to a section for rookies on posting that would be great...thanks all   :archer:

The bow needs to dry inside the house with the A/C at lease two weeks
I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means

The rawhide and stain shouldn't affect the drying process. Rawhide is hygroscopic and takes on moisture and releases moisture to the atmosphere just like wood does. As a matter of fact you added moisture to the wood when you glued down the rawhide.
I think Mark has the right idea. Your house with A/C not only cools but dehydrates. Even though the hot car can dehydrate the heat can adversely affect the glue that holds down the rawhide. TB glues release at 150deg(F).
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!
