More Bow Form Discussion
« on: September 01, 2016, 04:47:00 PM »
In the process of making new forms for the infamous Kenny M longbows, both 58-60" and 62-64". I have gleaned alot form reading others posts on here......I have 2 pieces of 23/32nd plywood with a 1/16" tempered hardboard core, glued and screwed together on 4" centers from both sides. I am arguing with myself on gluing surface for the back side of the bow......formica, fiberglass or aluminum. I have a couple pieces of .030 glass here, and plenty of formica available. Looking at 1/16" x 1 1/2" Aluminum strip at box store. My formica faced forms in the past allowed imperfections to transfer through to bow limb face. Only those on here really notice that, but still it bugs me to no end. Will 030 glass give me a better result or will it still show imperfections? What is the best adhesive for the aluminum if I go that route?  I think I saw Big Jim post something about using carpet tape to secure metal to the faces of his forms???Anyone else have experience with that?? Thanks in advance for input.

I grind .060 parallels to put on my forms with contact cement. Before you put anything on you should fill all imperfections with bondo and sand smooth.

Don't do alum.
glass is good
Like crooked stic said.

I use a ruler like this, it bends and you can see the high and low spots on the form.
I use it on my riser fades for the same thing.
