Carbon arrows for 56# pronghorn?
« on: March 08, 2008, 10:00:00 AM »
I've been wanting to try some carbons for my 56# pronghorn but am unsure which direction to go in, I draw 28".  I'm a little wary about not being able to cut carbons to tune them...any advice?  Thanks!

With carbons you can pick a 500 spine or a 400 spine and tune them for your bow.A 500 will be a lighter arrow,a 400 will be heavier because you will need to add alot of point weight to tune. You will need a high speed cut-off tool to cut the carbon arrow. You can use use a dremel tool.I use a mini cut off saw from Harbor Freight for around $25 and made a jig to make consistent length cuts. But a jig is not really necessary.I pick the carbon spine and the point weight I would like and tune from there.I start with a full length and trim alittle at a time.I shoot my arrows through a 2" foam target to hold the arrows position into a soft bag target.I use a saran food wrap to hold the insert in,just push the insert in with alitle saran wrap in for tuning. It will hold the insert in tight enough and the bag target won't pull the insert out when removeing the arrow. After you achieve the tuning you want,I then glue my inserts in with Powerbond or another slow set epoxy. It is not recommended to use hot melt with carbon arrows, some do and I have done it myself until I destroyed a new carbonwood.I had a 55# Pronghorn and I shot a Beman ICS 500 with 175 gr. point with 20 grs. behind insert at 29",shot great and weighed around 475.A pronghorn I believe is not cut to center,so I would suggest maybe a Carbon Express Heritage 150(.487 spine) would be a good choice to try.John at Sipsey River sells 2-shaft test kits in the spine of your choosing to try before investing in a whole dozen.
