Antler or bone overlays.
« on: March 10, 2017, 06:36:00 AM »
I have used antler before as tip overlays, but have heard some negative comments about using it as overlay material. I am aware of soaking it in superglue before hand to reduce porosity. What comments for people who have either successfully used it as such, or negative experience. .

I've had great success with antler. Never used bone but it should work fine too.
If the antler or bone is pithy just saturate with thin super glue, let it dry and sand it smooth before gluing it down to the limb tip. It is always better to pre-shape the overlays, feathering where it comes into the limb before gluing it down.

thanks Pat. I should have composed my question a little better though, as I am inquiring about using antler for the larger overlays such as on the back of riser etc.Just concerned that the larger size might have some limitations?

As long as it is in a non bending area it shouldn't be a problem. As a decorative overlay at the handle area? That should be no problem.

thanks Pat, have used it before but never had any feedback, so was concerned about durability.

Antler works with any string material and I'd bet bone would too.
rockkiller, you don't have to use phenolic with any string material. Hardwood works well too.
