Time to use this winged elm...
« on: March 10, 2017, 05:29:00 PM »
I have some seasoned wing elm that is about 5 years old and I sealed the ends when I cut it down.  I have about 5 sapling trees that are about 3" to 4" in diameter.  I still have all the bark on them.  It's been a long time so I have forgotten a lot.  Should I attempt to split these in half length wise and get two bows out of each?  What do you think?

I would remove the bark to see what's under it first. After 5 years with the bark on there could be some surprises. I think After removing the bark I'd saw them in half lengthwise, giving you 2  staves if possible. Small diameter saplings can be difficult to split and elm is always difficult.
Be sure the saplings grew straight by studying the bark. If the bark spirals along the sapling the wood under will be twisted.

Cool.  Yea they have been stored in my garage up on top of a very tall shelf so should be no damage to them.  We shall see!
