Bamboo ?,s for Bowyers
« on: March 11, 2017, 12:18:00 AM »
I was in a Nursery today and they had 8 foot aprox.
2" diameter Bamboo stalks. Some were the typical Bamboo color, some greenish color, and some brown. All appear very dry and some were split from end to end. Is this the same boo used for bows for backing? Will it work? Which color is best? Thanks

Im no expert on bamboo. The thickness of the wall is very important. 2 inch you would have a hard time getting a piece wide enough on the flat side for use in bow building. Also with unknown species of
You can geticed results. I had some weird bamboo with double nodes that blew up on 2 different bows before I realized I had gotten into a big waisted of time.

No that's not big enough in diameter. You need something around 4". Plus some boo is better than others.

You don't know how that bamboo was handled from the time it was harvested. Buy boo that was cut for bows or cut it yourself.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

A while back I cut a 4" diameter bamboo down and was able to flatten it out to 1 3/4 wide strips. They ended up about 1/8" thick.
