Lamination width issue
« on: March 13, 2017, 04:54:00 PM »
Howdy Folks,
new member to the group here and have a question

Has anyone here who has order lams ever had an issue with the width? I ordered some maple laminations from Binghams and they are wider than 1-3/4" by about an 1/8"
And if you have had this issue, did you just rip the lams down to correct width on a table saw?

Appreciate any info at all

Cheers

Welcome to the world of Trad.!    :)

I would say they do that because some bowyers go for 1-3/4" finished width.  That leaves an extra 1/8" for sanding.  I buy 1 3/4" stock, so my wood bows end up at 1 7/16" to 1 3/8" .

I was thinking that it would cause problems with the glass lams not lining up correctly since the black glass lams I have are 1-3/4" on the mark

I would sand the lams to width, the table saw will probably tear out, then you will be too narrow.

My lams are a little over, about .020 to .030 , some glass will be varying width too.

And welcome to the Bench!!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Thank you for the warm welcomes guys

And Kennym, thank you for that...would have learned the hard way I guess if I didn't hear that response from you........and I learned a ton the hard way with my first bow which I had issues with band tension in my form. So much to learn but so worth it if I can make a bow to hunt with

I know I will have more questions down the road and this place is such a resource for information.....just awesome

Cheers

It is a good idea to bring them to match the glass. I clamp them between the glass lams all together on edge on a flat table and attack them with a course sanding block.

Probably should mention to be cautious.

Gotta be easier ways but it works if your shop is tool challenged.   :biglaugh:

I had a pair that were wider than the glass just barely and didn't realize it.  It was a Pita to get the glass perfectly straight at glue up and created a lot of unneeded stress. My advice make sure they all match up before glue up.
The best made plan won't get it made the way you planned.

I have taped them together between scrap pieces to cut on the table saw without tear out or breaking, and on others I've cut them on the bandsaw then finished them on the edge sander if necessary.

Dang it!!! I have to agree with Roy.
Just got  lams for complete bow build from Kenny. They are waaaay nicer than those I used for my first bow. Better grain, color consistency and dimensions.
