Messin with ILF
« on: June 04, 2017, 11:37:00 AM »
I know, it is kind of hi-tech.    :D

I wanted to see about adjusting tiller to your shooting style for max results. So I bought a PSE Ghost recurve , I'm not much on recurves so I built a form and some limbs for it in the longbow variety.

Had some dirty ash for lams, went for broke with clear glass on first set.   :)

Put clear overlays at bolts, wish I'd used black. The limbs aren't finished yet.

The finish on this riser is the poorest quality I've seen in awhile, takes nothin to scratch it.

I made a mistake when I designed the limbs , the pad angles were too great for longbow limbs, and I just put enough curve to get tips ahead of riser. This made the limbs thin enough to keep weight down, that they have not enough stability. Very noodley ! Should have corrected angle just off riser end and put less hook in them.

All in all, a very comfy riser, shoots good and pretty quiet. Seems plenty fast, but for hunting I'd rather have more stable limbs, in case I don't use exact proper form. It's kind of like a 48 # bow with 30# stability limbs.   :saywhat:

I need to get another pic or 2 , first ones I didn't like.....
Stay sharp, Kenny.

It doesn't look all that radical in pictures. Maybe I could change stack and taper to get more what I want...?

Looks really good to me at full draw...

Looks good Kenny but I agree it needs more preload. With more reflex off the fades you would need less reflex on the outer third and should work out well. But that's my not so humble opinion    ;)
How long is it? Sure looks good at full draw.
When I get healthy enough to build again I want to build an ilf longbow form and limbs.

Full draw looks really nice. How did you correct that gap on the limb pads.?

So you are thinking the pad angle is not flat enough? I think my TDs are 11% with quite a bit of reflex in the tip end. With an .004 taper a most times a tip wedge.

Kenny, I see you used clear glass for overlays. 4 years ago I had only seen one set of ILF limbs up close and they had black phenolic on them..When I started building my ILF limbs 3 years ago I thought thats what everybody used.  I have been using 1/16" black phenolic for belly and back overlays. I run it thru my mini thickness sander a few times (one side only) to thin it down to .050, taper one end, cut to length with my shop scissors. At that time I thought phenolic was used since the limbs "rub" on the limb bolts and riser and glass might not hold up?? Phenolic is pretty easy to work with too, doesn't edge splinter like glass..

C'mon Roy, is that all ya got? LOL

Dean, the gap is part of the ILF system, they are somewhat adjustable for tiller and even a little draw weight. I thought it might be handy for fine tuning arrow spine and even form , like 3 under vs split.

Mike, yes, I think the recurve riser has too much angle for the longbow limbs. Need a bend at riser end to make it more like your 11* pad. My longbow TD takes 10* to 12*, so we are in the same range.

Robert, this is my first set, should have done some recurve limbs first I suppose.  BTW, how do you thin  1/16" down to .090?   :p

I only see one problem with the whole ILF system. If I had a fully adjustable fits all bow......I'd have no reason to build another bow.    :scared:
