You could probably take the AQ right up to the edge of the glue line without any problems. I used AQ on curly maple under glass and there were no glue troubles. I used ferric nitrate crystals from The Science Company mixed with water. No neutralizing needed.
I don't keep nitric acid on hand anymore. It ate through the cap on the bottle and I didn't realize it until surface rust began forming on everything in the shop
that's when I switched to the ferric nitrate.
Some walnut did not react to it at all and some turned black.
