Did I got the whole "tapre rate" right?

Ok, just to be sure:
If a lam has 0.003" taper, it means that it`s thinner by 0.003" for every inch.
So, for a 34" long lam, one end
will be- 0.003 X 34 = 0.102" thinner then the
other end. Converted to mm, it`s 2.59mm.
So, if I make my tapered sled 10mm thick at one end, I`ll need to make it 7.41mm thick at the other end.

Am I right or wrong?

I`ll also like to know if you guys have a way of making a tapered sled without a tablesaw (I do have a circular saw). My tapered sled SUCKS.

Unfortunately, I agree with Roy.
I take it one step further and just order my lams from kenny. I don’t have the tools to produce the quality and precision  in lams that he does.

I wish I could take the easy way and order everything.
Thing is, that when converting USD to ILS + shipping, it come out pretty pricey. So I try to not get discouraged and make everything myself. Hey, I got 3 performing bows already.... Just need that tapered sled fixed.

You might get more suggestions from the fellas if they know what you have to work with.

I`ve got:
-Compound sliding miter saw
-Circular saw
-Roybi 1056 hand held belt sander (with DIY table to turn into edge sander)
-450W Oscillating Spindle Sander (with a thinkness sanding attachment I`wve made to gring kams to thickness).

And hand tools- saws, files, rasps and so on

Make sure you check your lam thickness from side to side...  If it is off a little you can always flip your lam and send it through the sander on your last run...

It looks like you are pretty much set if your lam grinder is accurate.  I'm going to second ordering from kennym (or am I thirding it?).

Order .001 and a .002.  then you can combine them to grind a .003.  or, if you have some good very accurate tapers, you could use them as a guide to make your sleds.

Kenny's are bamboo and probably close to bullet proof.

Sorry, I know you didn't want to hear that but it might save you some grief.

You can make them with really accurate tapers and a drum sander. But I vote for getting them from Kenny.

Hello Arachnid,
with your setup, you could make taper sleds by gluing a bought taper to the back of a parallel board and push it through the thickness sanding attachment.
For tapers, you could buy  from  Rudi Weick  or from  André Boye  , but André is busy at his main job and can't sell for some time. These vendors are located in Germany so shipping might be easier and perhaps cheaper than from US.

Kaus has a good point. Don't try and cut the taper into the sled itself.

Just buy one tapered lam of the taper that you want to replicate, and lay it down on top of you sled. Now your sled is tapered. Now put your wood on top of that and when you grind it, it will have the taper you want.

This way you only buy 1 set of lams, and you can make as many as you like after that.

Yeah I need to make one eventually. I've got enough lams to keep me going for a while.
I've tried to make make taper sleds a few times and it's nearly impossible to get the kind of accuracy you would get from Kenny.

Easiest way for you, using the equipment you have would be to use two finished boards and use shims between them to get your taper rate. I would put the shims 10" apart, .030 at ten inches, .060 at twenty inches and .090 at thirty inches.
