Cracked Glass Salvageable?
« on: February 08, 2018, 04:09:00 PM »
Just got my glass order in today, and was dismayed to find both 72" lengths have a crack right down the middle of them.  One is 5.5" long and the other is 6.25".  In theory, I should be able to fill the crack with resin and cure it to get rid of it.  The glass with the smaller crack can be cut off if used on the belly and the remaining half inch of the longer crack would be sandwiched under the tip overlay on the back.  Just wondering if anyone has done something like that and how it worked out?

I wouldn’t use it unless I could cut the entire crack out. Why risk more money and material on a potential failure. JMHO.
I would check with your supplier and see about replacements. You could always save that glass for a bow of shorter design.

An excellent point...  I emailed them this morning to see if anything could be done but haven't heard anything yet.

was it in the shipping, or was it pre packaging?
what do you think?

If you are going to only have 1/2 inch of one crack to sort out and it will be under a tip overlay you could wick some superglue into it and it will be fine. The tips aren't 'working' and the overlay will stop anything moving.
If you got some carbon/glass laminating resin and worked it in you are back to perfect glass. That is how it is made in the first place. No magic to glass strips  :)

fujimo - If I had to guess I'd say it happened due to poor packaging, the riser block was not wrapped with anything and just floating around loose in the 36" long cardboard box.

mikkekeswick - That's what I was thinking.  I repair fiberglass aircraft components in a similar manner, but never with wood.  Was just hoping I would run across one of you all who had done it previously and been successful.

I bet the supplier would replace it free of charge.
I know the guys I order from do/would

I would not use it regardless if you are unable to get a refund, but any reputable vendor should refund you, text them a picture, I doubt they would want it back. Once it cracks it can tend to run through the rest of the glass, even more  under pressure, why risk all that work.

Got an email from the vendor today letting me know they were shipping out a new set of glass.  Offered to return the cracked glass but they refused.  Can't wait to get started on this bow!

Great.
Then make one with the cracked glass, fixed with some epoxy and prove to yourself what can be done with it  :)
