Do you think this carbon layup will hold together?
« on: February 12, 2018, 11:59:00 PM »
Back to Belly

.040 4 ply woven carbon, boo lam. riser, boo lam, Stabil-Kore, .030 Gordon'uni carbon sanded one side.

I'm mostly concerned about the Uni Carbon to Stabil-Kore to boo transition on the belly.

The whole belly of my riser is straight.

Thank you!!!

Yes it will work.
Even when I want a woven face to my carbon lams I still make the majority of thickness from uni-directional. It is of course much stronger than full woven lams.

Never built one, but talked to some bowyers and was told to put the uni carbon on the back, and the weave on the belly side.

Put the Stabil-Kore between the boo lams. I'm assuming this is a recurve. If it is a longbow, no need for the Stabil-Kore. Even if you go with your stack, it should glue fine. The Stabil-Kore is very permeable.

Talked to OMC awhile back they sell a 4ply carbon  for the back and 2ply for the belly. They say to put a.030 glass under the belly carbon. A person could use uni- weft there for the glass.

BrushWolf, Did you mean put the .030 glass over the belly carbon? I can think of no possible reason for putting it under the carbon.

2-Ply - A .018 thickness designed specifically for placement on the belly of the bow. It is made as an outside layer. A .030  piece of fiberglass sanded on both sides is needed to be placed underneath the carbon.

That's copied straight for there web site. Don't know much otherwise. When I talked to them I was more interested in just putting the 4 ply on the back of the bow. Maybe it's just for looks.

You're right, just went to there website and read it. Gonna have to call and talk to them as I've been wanting to build a carbon LB.

Dale, a friend and I have made a bunch of double carbon longbows with Uni on both sides. They have held up just fine including several elk hunts and bad treatment.

That's good to know beachbowhunter. I was told by a pretty reliable source that the belly carbon had to be covered by glass or it would explode. Did you use Gordon's uni carbon?

Coltin, what happened?

She gave out a couple inches up from the fadeout.  I'm not exactly sure who gave out first, almost think the back even tho one would think it should be the belly. I did get a few arrows out of it and MAN did that thing rip an arrow; I could barely get em out of the Glen Del buck! And the bow was supper dead in the hand. Time to save up for another experiment.
