Need Advice on New Blind Purchase?

Hey guys need your opinions. I have successfully hunte from ground blinds most of the last 10 years. I have tw0 pop up types, bu they seem a little low to use with a 60" bow, I cant shoot out of them comfortably with my recurves. I am looking at the new double bull/recurve/dark horse blind, but hate to shell out$400.00 for it. Do you fellas know of a like deminsioned blind, that is  close to as good, less money.

i can't speak for any of the blinds other than double bull.  i've got 3 of the Matrix that i've had for several years.  They are worth the money imo & i've never regretted buying.

I own the Matrix too, and did try a cheaper blind (an Ameristep, I think) and it broke the first time I put it up.   It was obviously made as a cheap knock-off and was not worth the money.  You get what you pay for in most cases.

I 2nd the double bull blind. I've got one that is 8-9yrs old and finally decided to drop the cash on a new darkhorse. I gaurentee you won't get that kind a service out of cheaper blind.I shoot a 60" LB out of mine and it is not the recurve model. Go Double Bull you won't be sorry!

Sam, check out the Cabelas Predator Den, I think it's made byh Primos...very simliar to the DB at around $140...

I have 3 DB recurve models but when we needed 16 blinds for our lease we bought Ground Max. they were around $120.00 each. They are not the quaility of a DB but we have been using them 3 years and they are holding up well

I have an Ameristep Penthouse that's plenty big enough for me (6' 3", 300#), my 66" longbow, and a chair.  I can get my son in it with me too (he's almost 6' and 200+#), and still shoot, but it's a bit crowded.

I've had one out for 5 years or so and it's still going strong.  Not saying the DB isn't better quality, but in my experience the Ameristep isn't exactly junk.  You can get a lemon in anything now and then.

Just a thought...if you've hunted out of ground blinds for 10 years and like this type of hunting wouldn’t you want to get the one that makes you the happiest.  Are you going to be happy with a blind that doesn’t meet all your standards?  No I’m not a salesman, but I have found one thing out in my life I don’t like cheap equipment. If you look at the amount of time invest in the hunt why cut corners?  Practice 4-6 nights a week, scout pre-season, during season and post-season...find the areas you want to hunt.  Take time off work if you can, if you’re a weekend warrior like me with two young children and overtime usually only comes in the 4th quarter, I want to be as productive as possible.  I save for the things I want knowing in the long run I’ll be happier with the product I choose.  Money doesn't grow on trees (at least none that I've found) so I understand that aspect of it.  I just found out this weekend I need to replace my intake manifold gasket on my truck...looking at $600 for that.      

I just got the DB Matrix "Recurve" model and it is huge...74" in the center (67" is the standard model).  I had some gift certificates from Christmas but had to shell out some green but I'm completely happy with the decision.  Wife told me to spend the extra money since she didn’t want to hear me complain down the road, I love this woman.  

Just a thought…

Fellas thanks for all the input. Oliverstacy, yes I do agree, buy as good a quality as you can afford. I have the ground max described above and a dog house pop up, my wife and I as well as my hunting buddies have taken several deer out of them, have used them for years and still have several years use left. With all your input guys I went over to a friend of mine today and looked at the Armeristep Penthouse, he had gotten one for Christmas and hadnt gotten it out and set it up. Took a few minutes, I got in with my bow, and a stool, set my portable target out, and shot about10 shots. Plenty of room especially if the wife or I want to film each other hunting. I got online and checked at Nathcezss.com, a shooting supply and they had them marked down from 200 to $139. Got one on the way. Again I appreciate all the help, thanks.

He have to love those wives, that tell you to put that junk down "it's not you", my wife is that way, I have to be careful, if I ask her what she thinks, she encourages me, and sometimes that's bad.

When it came to my custom Bow "whip", she said "that's the bow for you"

This will be my first, custom one made specifically for me.  "I hope she lets me shoot it"

Getting the best you can, will save you from selling it later.

You will be happy with the penthouse!! I have hunted out of quite a few blinds including DB and have not seen a need to shell out that kind of dough, they are not $200-$300 better. There is a time and a need to buy the best and that is usually optics.

I have a groundmax and a penthouse and they were both around $150 and work just fine. The hub desgin of the groundmax is much better than the folding type. I agree you don't need to spend $400 for a good sturdy blind.

The higher cost that is involved, comes from the poly/cotton fabric, that does not shine in the sun.  There are some different qualities in the double bull that are not found in any others, there are some differences, most the time you'll find that if you can find a cheaper blind seven out of 10 people will purchase the lower price one, not that there's anything wrong with that, I spend hours in my blind, and I have to cart it, at least a 1 1/2 to 2 miles, I wanna make sure it works when I get there, and I don't wanna compromise in the position that I have to put it in because of the Sunshine.  But the cheaper ones do work you just have to branch them in a little better to get the shine off the fabric.  I know double bull blinds their 10 years old and still working.  And it says a lot about them.  And the thing is they can still get maybe 60% of the price out of them if they sell them, that's a big plus too.

The important thing is to find one that works for you, and that's all you need
