Clear Glass and overlays...got any pics.
« on: March 08, 2018, 07:21:00 PM »
First time using clear glass.  Have solid zebra wood riser with walnut veneers.  Anyone have suggestions on tip and riser overlays?  On my colored glass bows I used different colored glass in combination of various woods.  Never thought about what to do with clear.

Tip overlays use zebra wood.
Riser, surprise me.

I like to use a piece of phenolic to reinforce the tip.  I typically like to try to color coordinate it with the bow.

On top of the phenolic, I'll use one of the woods used in construction of the bow.  Sometimes I'll use bone, antler, or horn.  Just depends on the bow.

For an accent in your riser, you might use whatever wood you're using as a core.  Maple for example.  IMHO, accenting with the core wood kinda ties the bow together visually.

Here's an example of a riser I did recently.  Redheart and maple.

Here's an example of the tip overlays on the same bow.  Red and white phenolic to compliment the woods used.

I'm with Roy. Zebra for the tip overlays. I'd put some black phenolic under it for F.F.  On the riser why not do Zebra over Walnut?

Beautiful bow Craig!  I have this bow already glued up and I did not include an accent in the riser.

Zebra over walnut - that might work - thanks!

The clear glass will look kinda grayish and really blend with the walnut or black phenolic when viewed from the side.

If you want high contrast, I'd use white glass as first layer over the walnut to make overlays "pop".  Only downfall is a lot of finishes will yellow the white glass.
