Androids,Video Uploads & Sites & Anti Virus
« on: May 25, 2010, 05:08:00 PM »
Hopefully this is OK to post here. While a phone it really is a pocket computer also.

I will start this by saying, I am sick and tired of. Not having cell reception in lots of places and my other buddys having some. Even if it is spotty, a little is good. None is a bummer
My Sprint contract is up, and this rat is jumping ship to Verizon. None are perfect, and I do not expect them to be.
I am waiting on my new HTC Incrediable to arrive. And while I wait I have been studying what I could find on the tech sites. (Seems they perfer to talk Iphone)

I have a couple questions for you techie's.

From what I understand the android phones are a lot like Linux. And do not require any Anti virus, spyware protection. (Is that true or false?)
And if its false what is the best protection programs for them??

Also what safe guards should I employ. While online from nearby hackers in public.

I have not done any video uploading to any sites. So I am real green there. What sites are in your opinion best for this?? Photobucket??? Or what other site????

Thanks for your opinions, and guidence.

Brent

dunno squat about the htc, but if it's a truly unix based os yer far and away better off than any ms os.  all my pc's run linux and i have no concerns about getting hacked or zombied.

photobucket is the worst, imo - they use flv and that's just terrible.  i stick with youtube, works just fine for vids under 10 minutes.  for longer vids there's some archiving sites out there, i used one that was quite good but can't remember the name or url.

cheers,
rob

Brent,

I have found a lot of Android OS info at this site:
 http://www.droidforums.net/

On the left side of the home page is a Site Navigation pane.  They have an Incredible forum but there is not much info there yet - prob cause it is new.  A lot of the info pertaining to your questions can be answered in the Droid forums even though it is a different phone - same operating system.

That said, I am not running any anti-virus or spyware apps and haven't had any problems.  I got the phone in November.  The "Marketplace" on your phone will have lots of apps to look through for download.  Some have a small fee and others (lots) are free.

We are still awaiting Adobe Flash for viewing videos on the web sites but they are saying June - we shall see.  On my Droid is a You Tube link to watch videos on You Tube, only.

I use my Droid a lot for work and at home it is my laptop when the wife has the PC tied up.  I have a wireless router hooked to my cable modem in the house - way faster than 3G for browsing, downloading or watching vids.

:wavey:  Rob and Ray

     Thanks for the info

I keep reading things like this, guess I should believe in it.
Contrary to what well-meaning security gurus will tell you, the SMobile people are trying to scare Android users into thinking open source is less secure than closed source such as Apple's, Microsoft's, and Nokia's. It's important you not fall for the ruse.

(Contrary to what antivirus companies would have you believe, open source is always more secure. In fact many respected security experts believe only open source can ever be secure.

Companies usually have a marketing ploy in mind when they steer clear of open source for their most critical components.)
Android Designed Secure

(But in contrast to the iPhone where everything runs as root (!) Android 'sandboxes' all its applications. Each application effectively runs as its own user and permissions are such that no one user (application) can get at the data for any other.

This is what ISE recommended for Apple's iPhone - in vain.)

right on brutha brent - anyone thinking or saying that open source linux is less secure than microsoft is either ignorant or shilling for billy boy & co.

i just loaded win 7 64bit on a pc and explorer 8 wouldn't even allow me to download firefox ... i found that both interesting and disturbing - i had to install directly the app via a flash drive after downloading it on one of my linux machines.  :D

Brent,

The link and video worked without a hitch.  You will have a lot of fun with that Android - guess we can't call it just a phone anymore ....

Pretty cool that Payton hung right in there with the big boys.  You just need to get him a belt or suspenders for his britches    ;)

Coaster,

The Droid device / phone is made by Motorola.  Android is the operating system that many phone vendors are using to make these mini computers / phones do what they do.  There are several new models on the horizon that will be faster and have more options.  They will only be limited by what the plan carrier limits.

Coaster, not sure if you caught it in the first post. The phone I have is a HTC Incrediable, though Verizon. And as Ray mentioned it is a android operating system. It really is a amazing little unit.    It takes great still pic's and as you can see. Some very nice video JMHO  :D

Noted on the belt Ray, its just trying to get him to wear it  :jumper:

I posted some more video on the POW WOW forum in the (Who is back from Compton and what was your highlight?) tread.
