Short Robertson VF riser for 30" draw length?
« on: March 10, 2008, 11:33:00 PM »
I've been looking at a 58" Robertson Vision Falcon T/D, but have a 30" draw length.  Anyone with a 30+" draw length shooting a Robertson Vision Falcon T/D with the short riser at either 58" or 60"? How about the Long Riser at 60"?

The Stykbow website advises that the Short Riser is good to 29", but the Long Riser is recommended for 30" or greater.  I'm fine with the long riser, but would think the short riser/longer limbs would be more accommodating.

Any thoughts or experience?

Thanks for any input.
Curt

The long riser recommendation is for the 60-inch bow, right?  Two inches more bow length, regardless of how one gets there (through riser or limb length) will be more accommodating to the longer draw.

On the same bow length, say 58 inches, the shorter riser, longer limbs should be a little more forgiving.  The longer riser, shorter limbs, a little speedier.  But these differences are so small that most of us wouldn't notice them.

However, overall bow length related to draw length is an important consideration.  Personally, I think 60 inches is the absolute minimum for a 30-inch draw.  I shoot 60-inch recurves with my 28-inch draw.  My hunting partner, who has a 30-inch draw, shoots 64-inch recurves.  I'd certainly recommend something in the 62-64-inch range for your draw length.  I'd also recommend you talk to the bowyer and get his recommendation.

Having said all this, the next person up will say he shoots a 58-inch bow with a 32 inch draw, with no finger pinch, etc.  Sure, it's possible, but a longer bow will be more pleasant to shoot.
Good luck.

I shoot a 58" bow with 32" draw with no problems...

Yeah, I wish.  I only have 27" draw, but all that Orion says is good info.

I have both short and long riser VF making 58" and 60" bows and my favorite is the LR and 60".

I would say, "Do not go shorter than 60."

I draw 29" and had a 56" robertson peregrine. It was a great bow and was really smooth for me. That was my "little fireball". I think it was 62 pounds and it was a shooter!
Is it September yet?!

I have a 58 inch Gozhawk which he doesn't make anymore, it has a 14 inch riser and it is very smooth at my 29 inch draw.  I think 60 inches would work for you, it is hard to beat Dick's bow's!  Joseph

Thanks very much for your advice, I took it and spoke with Dick Robertson today.  He was patient, helpful and every bit the gentleman folks have said he is.  He recommended the short riser, so we arranged for a test drive of a 60" Short Riser VFII that's 48# at 28", should be about 52-54# at my draw length.

I'll report back when I get it. Can't wait!

The short riser with a longer working limb makes the only sense, the limbs on a 58" SR would still be too short. Yote and Dick know what they speak of! Shawn

Reporting back:  I recieved the bow from Robertsons (Short Riser, 60", 48# at 28") by FedEX 2 days after talking with Dick, and it was all I had hoped for.  My original curiosity of how much stack at my 30" draw was answered right off--no problem!  It was smooth as silk right back to my anchor, even feels like it could accommodate 31" or more if necessary.  The bow shoots smooth, fast and quiet, and my only thought was that I would might want to try the high wrist riser.  I called Dick and he said (in a nice way) that he didn't have any high wrist grips laying around and I'd have to wait the usual prep time for a custom order.

I decided that I'm going to keep it and consider myself lucky to have scored a new Vision Falcon in 2 days. If you want to see a picture of it, go to the Stykbow website, it's listed under "In-stock Bows", #SRV-775 (till they take it off).

Thanks again for all replies, I value your input.
