Bear Custom Takedown?

I had a friend offer to give me a Bear custom takedown that needs a new riser...the current one is cracked! He says if I can build a new riser I can have it! Likely about 55lb.(at least I'm hoping).
So, any opinions on this bow? I shot the one he brought to the club last night (his GOOD one) and found it very smooth to draw and dead in the hand...These are the older models.....possibly late 80's.

I have 6 Fred Bear t/d's. An A and B mag handle, 2 B wooden handles from the 80's and an A and B wood handle made in 2001.  I love those bows.  My B handle made in 2001 with 65# FF limbs is my goto bow.  I've killed many deer with it.  I have never had a problem with any of the handles but I did have an older limb start to come unglued.  I sent it to Bear for repairs.  They said they couldn't fix it but sold me a new set for about half price.

Those are good bows and extra limbs are pretty easy to come by.

I've got two wood Gainesville B risers, two Mag B riser and several sets of Grayling & Gainesville limbs. I've owned one of the Mag risers & limb sets since new. I'm now mostly shooting a Dalaa, but the Kodiak TD remains the smoothest drawing bow I've ever experienced, and a good shooter.

Could you show a picture of the crack..Would it be possible to repair it...bowdoc

Bowdoc, I'll post pics as soon as I pick it up at the club next Tuesday....He says it's broken, but did not elaborate...I didn't care either. I'm getting ready to build another riser for a different TD (Browning prototype) that also had a small crack in the lam. riser. I crazyglued it and have shot it, but it's a bear(no pun) at 60lbs. Not very smooth either, so I'm anxious to get hold of this one...I'll report the specs. as well at that time.

Easternarcher, I do have two sets of 60# limbs I don't need. PM me or whatever if interested. Both are Gainesville. One set I ordered new myself way back, hunted with 'em off and on with my 1st Mag riser. They were just plain straight shooting, I loved 'em. The other set came in a deal, are good but have a small finish area flaked off. I strung 'em up, they shoot well, too.

I'm a LH and am not sure about selling any risers right now anyway. I just removed one from the Classified a few weeks ago after shooting it again. I don't need the heavier limbs anymore, though. I can shoot 'em but my elbows eventually complain and I am not getting any younger.

Bowdoc and others....as promised! here are the photos of the Bear Custom that I recieved tonite....I'm afraid one limb is also badly damaged. I doubt it is salvageable. MAybe Bowdoc can take a look.

That limb is dead for sure....It would be like holding a fire cracker in your hand waiting to see what was gonna happen next..I would burn that one.The riser however may be repaiable.It is hard to say from the pic,but if a guy were to buy some loc tite 420....don't buy something else,as it may not work as well...420 and a syringe,I would just inject a little loc tite every 24 hr..I don't mean the whole bottle at once as it will dry along the outer edges and maybe not dry hard enough under the socket.So just a little LT everyday (24 dry time).Sooner or later the crack will get full.Once that 420 is dry,it's way harder then the original wood would have been.The problem is...the LT or any thin super glue will run out of any gap crack or opening...It will get all over everything,sometimes.So you eather will need to be super careful or plan on refinishing the riser once you sand the extra LT off,pending it goes all over everything....bowdoc

OK...I thought the limb was toast as well.
Wonder where to get a replacement set as a reasonable price? You got any BOWDOC?

I had planned on re-finishing the riser Bowdoc. It's in good shape, but could be better. So if I start on one area, I might as well do the whole thing.

that crack in the riser is common in the Gainsville risers and should not be taken lightly, especially  if you are going to be shooting any hunting weight limbs with it. Don't use a fast flight string, even if you buy new fast flight compatible limbs from Bear. (get a set of original green tips)  I'd be sending it to Bowdoc for repair and refinishing. You can get another set of  limbs easy enough on e8ay. good luck

I don't know where your looking, but I've only seen one set of Shafer limbs on the 'bay and 3 complete bows recently(all out of my league)...

true the Bear limbs aren't up for auction everyday, but they will come around. Bear made thousands of limbs for the Custom Takedowns, there is nothing all that rare about them, have some patience... Remember you don't "win" an auction on e8ay.... you agree to pay more than anyone else in the world who is also interested in that item....good luck.

just checked the auctions..these green tips ended recently (march 9th) , seems they went for a very reasonable price ($125) and a good hunting weight (60#)....
