OK, I have already recieved some great advice from one of the regulars here on this topic(thanks JC), but I thought I would get some more info from the rest of you. I am looking to break into the world of longbows and have two I am looking hard at. Habu Death Adder, 64", 70# at my draw, or Hornes Combo Hunter, 66", 61# at my draw. Would like to know what everyone thinks of these two bows. Both are in excellent condition and both have bamboo limbs. Price is within $75 of each other. Whaddaya think?

I've never shot a Hornes, but I'm a big fan of Habu bows. I think there are a lot of good bows out there, and there are plenty that are as good as a Habu, but I don't think that there are any that are better. I've got a Habu recurve that I will never sell. It's pretty much my go-to bow when I go out to hunt.

Which Habu do you own? How is it compared to others for speed? I have heard they can be heavy with a quiver added. Do you shoot yours with or without a bowquiver? Sorry about all the questions, any help appreciated.

My only prblem with either one would be the length. I like a shorter LB 62"s or so. I have Faith right now and it is a sweet shooter, it is a Hornes. I have shot the Habus as well and like the Hornes better, but 66"s. OUCH! Shawn

Habu,
I know Chris isn't very flexable w/ wood combos but there is no better built bow on the market period.Yes they have alot of mass weight but they are so stable you feel the bow dosen't perform well.I've owned quite a few of the top bowyers bows and Chris's bow will shoot w/ in acouple fps of the best.Keep in mind we are speaking of a bow w/ a 8+'' brace height.I have shot more robinhoods w/ Chris's bow than all others combined.Just look on the classified and see how many Habu's to Horne's are 4 sell.

Shawn- I can understand your liking for shorter bows, but when you are 6'5" and have a 31" draw, your options are limited!!

I have not shot or seen the Habu (probably none in Auss yet), but I own the Horne's three piece longbow. It is a very well made bow and I love the quality of construcion. However for me the grip is all wrong. If you are a high wrist shooter, or you need a meatier grip - then don't get the Horne's. It only has a small indentation for the grip!

I like to shoot the bow but I am not very consistant and could never be with a grip like that!! I have just ordered a new bow with the grip that I think will be much better for me.

Shoot both bows if you can - the grip is the most important part of a bow. I think today they all shoot within close proximity of each other regarding speed - bit the difference beteen a great accurate bow or not has to be the grip.

My pleasure Brack - I must be a bit thick or something but it has taken me a long time to work out what I said about the grip. I have many bows now, but I don't have the grip that I like on the bow that I like. My Savannah and Vision have great grips, but I don't like the bows as much as my customs.

Hopefully the new one I ordered yesterday will fulfull all those things - the bow I like with the correct grip!!

The 2 Vyperkahns I have.I would consider a medium/heavy table on the grip.That is in comparison to a Dale Dye recurve.IMO has a very high grip w/ a huge table.If you shoot the bow stated in your name.I would say the Vyperkahn has a slightly larger table.Not sure about the DA have yet to see one.

I have owned a Habu Death adder for about 3 weeks and love it... The grip although it's a matter of preference feels very natural in the hand. The DA is a little heavier in overal mass with a quiver and arrows than I am use to, but the bow is dead in the hand and smooth to draw. I actually traded for this bow in the classifieds, a new one would be well out of my price range, but if you are looking at one that is in excellent shape at a good price, it might just be worth it. The craftmanship is superb!

Brackshooter, I've got one of his recurves right now. I'm not much a longbow shooter, but I shot a Death Adder quite a bit, as my buddy has one. Both are excellent. I buy and sell bows all the time, but the habu I have is one that I will never part with.
Habus are fast. In fact, I think his new ones are even faster. I do shoot mine with a bow quiver. The recurve has quite a bit of mass weight to it, but I like this for stability. I doubt you will think the Deather Adder is too heavy, even with the quiver one it.

Thanks for the replys fellas. Hey SuperKodiak, out of curiosity, have you ever chronographed your DA? Just wondering how it does in the speed department for you. Although maybe with a 31" draw i dont have much to worry about.

I've owned a Habu Vyperkahn, Death Adder and a TD Recurve. Never should have sold the TD Recurve. I now have another Vyperkahn and I have a Vyperkahn longbow on order. Haven't shot a Horne, but Habu bows are great shooters. I don't remember thinking mine were too heavy. Heavy enough to be dead in the hand though.

Brack shooter here is some data from a bow setup to hunt. 62" 2003 DA 61#@29" (weighed on calibrated scale within 1/4 #)drawn to 29" with 505gr arrow was 192fps with my finger release. My fingers release sucks,so I tested with a mechanical release and got 200 fps. String was 13 strand DF97 with 2 woolie wispers at the 1/4 point, nice and quiet. YMMV
